We love supporting our pregnant and postpartum clients! It can be a hell of a time, and we love being part of your team.
Whether it's managing pelvic/hip/back/pubic pain, correcting bladder and bowel dysfunction, reducing pain with sex, managing prolapse non-surgically, teaching body mechanics for lifting or chest/breastfeeding, labor/push/c-section prep, family training, mobilizing c-section and perineal scars, facilitating a continuation of or return to exercise, or checking in with mental health...we have you covered!
Book an evaluation online at www.queencitypelvichealth.com for our Fort Thomas, KY or Anderson Twp, OH offices today!. Referrals are not needed, but we may ask for clearance from a medical provider before utilizing certain interventions.
This is an important one. When I tell you I got chills upon receiving this text last week....
I had originally noticed a white plaque on the client's right inner labia/vestibule. I asked her to follow up with her physician as I suspected lichen sclerosis or lichen planus, both of which respond well to treatment if caught early, but can increase risk of dysplasia/vulvar cancer or vaginal stenosis if left untreated. He told her the tissue was a dry patch of skin.
There are lessons here:
1) Trust your instincts. There should be no shame or guilt in seeking a second opinion. In this case, advocating for herself and not waiting until the next annual gynecology appointment to check in with a different provider may have been life-saving for this client.
2) Know your body! There are so many people who don't know what their skin and body look like "down there" and trust medical personnel (often overworked these days) to catch anything that may be wrong. Please save this post for the slides on how to do a genital self-exam. Knowing a baseline will help you know if something changes so you can report the changes to a provider. This goes for breast self-exams and general skin checks as well. Take control of your health and don't be afraid to advocate for yourself!
If you think you may have lichen sclerosis or planus, please see your provider and check out @thelostlabiachronicles. Jaclyn's page is a wealth of information.

Fun Fact Friday! Pelvic health therapists treat the whole body comprehensively because they understand that the pelvic floor is part of a larger system that has to work together to function optimally. It's not uncommon for someone to come to us for pelvic floor issues and find themselves getting an old shoulder injury treated. It's all connected!
Have we made any connections for you that surprised you? Did any of the topics we mentioned surprise you?

We already missed a week of Fun Fact Friday because we were too busy celebrating our βπ½ year anniversary last week! Still brimming with pride over everything this little practice has accomplished in such a short time π₯Ήπ₯Ήπ₯Ή
This week's topic, in continuance with the 2nd anniversary: Favorite Thing About Working at QCPH!
I ran out of space, so here are a few more of mine:
π The chat! If you think coming to therapy will be like going to MD or dentist appointments, think again. It's casual, it's fun, it's learning, it's bonding-it's more like getting to catch up with your college bestie. I look at my schedule some mornings and think, "Oh shoot, I love everyone on my list today" because then I have to set my visual timer so I don't go overboard on chatting and accidentally dip into the next person's session. IYKYK π
π Making my passion my work. Turns out, geeking out about pelvic health is my biggest hobby, and I don't just spread the love to you guys. My 3 year old bumped his side yesterday while climbing out of his chair and said, "I bumped my pelvis!" He loves the skeleton and learning muscle names (pectoralis major and latissimus dorsi are our current works). He also practices diaphragmatic breathing on the potty ππΌ
π Treating clients long-term if needed without insurance constraints. Seeing people during pregnancy and postpartum, following clients with more chronic or autoimmune conditions, treating clients with flare-ups...all much easier when not waiting for referrals, insurance pre-certs, peer-to-peer reviews with insurance companies, etc. And we are able to treat the person & functional deficits in front of us, not just the diagnosis written on the referral
π Meeting the newborns who kicked me while I worked on their moms' pregnant bellies
π Seeing clients through multiple pregnancies, watching them develop into their new roles as mothers...there is a beautiful word for this: MATRESCENCE
π Family training sessions, where we invite pregnant clients to bring a birth partner in for labor prep so they know how to help.
IG cut me off, but I have more! To be continued π

No Terrible Two's here! This time last year, I was reflecting on and celebrating QCPH's first anniversary alone, but not this year! Our second year brought two new outstanding and brilliant pelvic health therapists (@physio.kmaines and @aw_pelvichealth) and our wonderful administrative assistant (@barrett785), a second location in Fort Thomas, KY with @hummingbirdheal, four presentations at local/state/national conferences/summits, a second OT Fieldwork student graduated and now working full-time in pelvic health, two documents co-authored for American Occupational Therapy Association @aotainc and three major motions voted on and passed, four fundraisers completed (@fernsidecenter, @kwfliving, @sweetcheeksdiaperbank, @tidalbabeperiodbank), three workshops offered (with @barre3fortthomas, @ivpilates, and @otfnewport), two @cincypostpartum Fourth Trimester Circles attended as guest listeners, two podcast episodes recorded, one interview completed for @life.unmeasured, the Best of the East Award for Physical Therapy Clinic from Cincy Magazine @cincymagazine, one visit from the AOTA National President @alyson.d.stover, and hundreds of clients treated with compassion and empathy at our locations in Fort Thomas and Anderson Twp @practiceyogacincinnati.
Thank you to our clients, colleagues, and communities for continuing to support us so we can better support you! This practice is truly a dream come true, and I am beyond excited to see what year three holds with the support and expertise of this phenomenal team.
Happy 4th wedding anniversary to my ever-supportive husband @dlcox81. You're the reason I can do all the things β€οΈ

We thought we would start a new feature here on the Queen City Pelvic Health socials...Fun Fact Friday! It may be something personal to help you get to know us, something about pelvic health, or something else totally random. We hope to make it last, but, you know, life gets busy sometimes, and clients and families come before socials.
We decided to start with silly fun facts about our team members...our most random jobs! We all love working for QCPH now, but it wasn't always this "glamorous" (yeah, we know we deal in lube, vaginas, and rectums, but we keep it classy π). We would love to hear your most random jobs (and maybe even what you do now) in the comments!
Want to know more about our work history and education stats? Check out our freshly updated website www.queencitypelvichealth.com (p.s. you can also book online from there!).

Thanks to all of my occupational therapy buddies who are at the American Occupational Therapy Association national convention in Orlando this week for reaching out with video clips and messages regarding my mention in national President Alyson Stover's Presidential Address earlier today! It was a joy to have @alyson.d.stover visit Queen City Pelvic Health and Wellness last November and to work with her and the rest of @aotainc in advocacy efforts over the last two years! Missing you all and looking forward to seeing you all at the OTs in Pelvic Health Summit in Phoenix in August!

ππNEW OFFERINGππ The team at QCPH is constantly getting messages from friends and former clients to get referrals for physical therapists for conditions outside of pelvic health, for themselves as well as their spouses, siblings, parents, friends, etc. We appreciate your trust in our recommendations, and, honestly, we still think we are the women for the job! ππΌππ€·βοΈ
Dr. Karly Maines, PT, DPT, OCS, is answering the call! She is now offering general Physical Therapy appointments as well as Pelvic Health appointments in our Fort Thomas, KY office πͺπ½π¦΅πΎ. Karly has been working in orthopedics since 2012, and obtained her Orthopedic Clinical Specialty certification in 2015. She is well-versed in all issues pertaining to neck and back pain, hip and knee pain, shoulder and arm pain, or other issues related to sports injuries or return to exercise (let's be honest, she won't turn her pelvic floor brain off for these appointments either-if you know us, you know we already treat head-to-toe for our pelvic therapy appointments!). Karly is trained in dry needling with/without electrical stimulation, cupping, manual therapy, neuromuscular re-education, exercise progression, and more.
General Physical Therapy appointments will still be one hour long and one-on-one with your therapist in a peaceful, non-clinical environment-everything you already know and love about Queen City Pelvic Health and Wellness β€οΈ We are confident we can get you recovered and returning to your life quickly! Book online with Karly today at www.queencitypelvichealth.com! π
(Client photos used with permission...needles not required for treatments, they just happened to be useful for these clients π

Karly (@queencitypelvichealth) and Taylor (@ivpilates), with their unique but related skill sets, collaborated for a fun evening of pilates and the pelvic floor! Taylor’s expert knowledge in movement mechanics allowed participants to find the connection of movement and breath to the pelvic floor. Karly followed with a question and answer session, providing education on how to be an active participant in the health and wellness of your pelvic floor throughout your day to day life. The room felt energetic and filled with light!

We at Queen City Pelvic Health and Wellness are so incredibly grateful to all of you in our community, near and far, who took the time to vote daily to help us win the 10th Annual @cincymagazine Best of the East Competition for Physical Therapy (we like to think they were including Occupational Therapy in this category π)! This is an unbelievable honor, especially for a practice less than two years old. Moving from a solo practice of just Rakhi (OT) in Anderson Twp to a team of four with the addition of Karly (PT), Alex (PT), and Kelly (admin) as well as a second location in in Northern Kentucky in the last 6 months has been a wild and gorgeous ride.
Future clients, we are so looking forward to being partners in your care. Current and previous clients, we would love to hear how QCPH made a difference for you with a note in the comments, a Google review (choose the correct location please!), or even an email or text β€οΈ
Referrals are not needed in Ohio or Kentucky, HSA/FSA accepted, therapist bios and online booking are available at www.queencitypelvichealth.com π See you soon! ππΌ

QCPH owner Rakhi was so pleased to join @alyson.d.stover, President of the American Occupational Therapy Association, as a guest on the OTs in Pelvic Health Podcast with host Lindsey Vestal of @functionalpelvis. Check out how Rakhi's description of what she does as an occupational therapist might have led to the creation of a new OT theme song π, hear what Alyson observed in a client session she did with Rakhi, and learn about the power of advocacy. Hello, QCPH family! Please help me wish our administrative assistant, Kelly Barrett, a very happy birthday! π₯³πππ
Kelly has been a lifesaver taking over administrative tasks and managing the QCPH emails, phone calls, and scheduling.
Kelly is a Cincinnati native and Xavier University (humanities, liberal arts, and natural sciences) graduate. She works as a movement professional - water aerobics, aquatic personal training, Pilates reformer - specializing in post rehab, chronic conditions, and post-natal care. Kelly became interested in these areas while on her own health journey-she fell in love with them and wanted to make them more accessible to others. Kelly geeks out over the science and experiences of healing modalities such as bodywork, energy work, and nutritional healing.
Kelly spent several years living in Chicago working in public health (HIV care and prevention) before moving back to the Cincinnati area. Kelly has also done admin work for a chiropractic and functional medicine office for the last seven years. She lives on the east side of Cincinnati with her husband and son.
Kelly is an amazing friend and is full of brilliant advice, which I probably take advantage of more than I should. Wishing you only the best in the coming year! Happiest birthday, Kelly!

Years ago, it was thought that doing kegels was the best way to help a pelvic floor, but newer research has proven otherwise. When you know better, you do better. If you're still doing kegels at every stop sign, ask yourself this question...when was the last time you leaked urine sitting at a stop sign? π€π€π€ If you have been trying to do kegels for years, but you are still having leakage...is it really helping?
If you are leaking urine when going from sit to stand, try this instead to activate your core and pelvic floor in a more functional way. You can translate these tips into other position changes as well, such as going from squatting or sitting on the floor to standing or getting up from getting low on a dance floor πππΊπ½
Still have questions? Schedule an evaluation online for an individualized assessment and treatment plan with a pelvic floor therapy specialist. www.queencitypelvichealth.com
